Guyana Chronicle: With Japan playing a major part in helping Guyana meet the challenges of providing safe drinking water and ensuring that the East Demerara Water Conservancy is functioning the way it should, Guyana has recognised this developmental partner contribution in the fight against climate change and its leaning on the eastern country's influence for a good agreement in Cancun. This was made clear during the commissioning ceremony of the Guyana Water Inc.'s water treatment plant at Queenstown, ...

The agreement will be signed when South African Deputy President Kgalema Petrus Motlanthe comes to Seoul Friday for a two-day trip, Yonhap news agency said, quoting an unidentified South Korean foreign ministry official. Arjen Hoekstra’s innovation: the water footprint
Posted by Washington Post: Juliet Eilperin on October 2nd, 2010
Guardian: You can imagine the eye rolling. In 2002 Professor Arjen Hoekstra first attempted to engage business and the general public with the unsustainable amounts of water embodied in almost every consumer staple. Here was a world struggling to get to grips with carbon footprints, let alone the H2O being squandered by ignorance and thoughtless design. Since then Hoekstra has worked tirelessly to humanise the concept of a water footprint. He has created a calculator at waterfootprint.org based on the ...

Reuters: Short-lived Tropical Storm Nicole triggered flash flooding that killed at least nine people in Jamaica and dumped heavy rain on Florida, Cuba, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas on Wednesday. The broad and ragged storm formed on Wednesday morning and dissipated Wednesday afternoon. U.S. and Cuban meteorologists disagreed on whether it ever actually became a tropical storm at all. Bangkok Post: Namtok Makok, or Makok waterfall, is one of the four main falls that spill down the sides of the Sa Bap (pond of sin) mountain range. As legend has it, hunters in the past described the range as a square, appearing the same from all sides, and surrounding a vast pond filled with lotus flowers and fallen trees. As I followed the trail, I wondered if there would be a graceful kinnari (a mythical half-bird, half-woman creature) enjoying the water. Namtok Makok is an ideal ...

Pakistan: Osama bin Laden softens tone, but to what end?
Posted by Washington Post: Juliet Eilperin on October 2nd, 2010
AP: Softening his tone, al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden issued a humanitarian appeal on Saturday urging Muslim governments to do more to help Pakistan's flood victims and expressing worry about climate change. It was his second purported audiotape in as many days. The less aggressive approach contrasted with al-Qaida's previous calls for a violent response in what experts say could be a "good cop, bad cop" ploy to exploit anger over the flooding and rally support for the terror ...
India: Climate change affecting NE monsoon pattern
Posted by Washington Post: Juliet Eilperin on October 2nd, 2010
Assam Tribune: In what seems to be the first scientific confirmation from a valid authority of the impact of the climate change phenomenon on India, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology Director Prof BN Goswami has said that the number of heavy monsoon rainfall incidents in its NE region was reduced. This, he said, has happened under the impact of the global warming phenomenon. On the contrary, Prof Goswami said, incidents of heavy monsoon rainfall are on the rise in the Central part of the ...

Unlikely activist? Osama bin Laden calls for action on climate change
Posted by Washington Post: Juliet Eilperin on October 2nd, 2010
Reuters: Osama bin Laden yesterday criticised relief efforts in Pakistan and called for action against climate change in what appeared to be a new audio tape from the al-Qaida leader. The audio message lasted about 11 minutes, and was broadcast with a video showing still images of Bin Laden and images of natural disasters, the Islamist website used by al-Qaida said. The authenticity of the tape and its precise release date could not be immediately confirmed. In it, however, Bin Laden ...
