Star Gazette: Gov. Andrew Cuomo surprised supporters and critics alike in October, when he casually mentioned during a debate that the state's long-awaited report on the health impacts of hydraulic fracturing is "due at the end of the year."
With just weeks remaining in 2014, the state Department of Health reiterated Friday that it anticipates finishing up the report -- which has been in the works since 2012 and will determine the fate of large-scale fracking in New York -- by month's end.

California’s drought may be worst in a millennium

ClimateWire: When Daniel Griffin first heard media reports earlier in the fall that California's drought was the worst in the past few centuries, he didn't quite buy it.
Griffin, an assistant professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Society at the University of Minnesota, had a decade of experience studying paleoclimate and environmental science using tree-ring data. As the lakes and air get several degrees warmer, and ice nearly disappears from the lakes, the air blowing from the west will bring more rain, the study says.

Convened by the United Nations, the talks aim to craft the framework for an international accord to curtail heat-trapping emissions and adapt to changes already occurring on the planet. The final agreement is due to be signed in Paris next December.

Agence France-Presse: While loved ones braced for the full impact of Typhoon Hagupit back home, Filipino activists in Lima urged climate negotiators Saturday to act with more urgency in drafting a global plan to limit such potentially life-threatening events.
"To us in the Philippines, we are not any more debating on whether or not the impacts of climate change are here, we have experienced it," Voltaire Alferez of the Aksyon Klima Pilipinas NGO grouping said on the sidelines of the talks.
"Year after year we are...
