TVNZ: Protesters have managed to prevent the restart of construction work on a Thirty-Metre Telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawai'i today. Hawaiian media have reported the TMT crews attempted to reach the site of construction only to be met by hundreds of peaceful protesters ‘standing in protection of Mauna Kea as a sacred Native Hawaiian site’. Pacific Business: Work crews for the Thirty Meter Telescope project failed to reach the construction site at the summit of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano Wednesday after hundreds of protesters opposed to the $1.4 billion observatory blocked the road, resulting in the arrests of several people. Some 300 protesters set up some two dozen lines across the Mauna Kea access road near the visitors center at the 9,200-foot elevation, blocking five trucks escorted by Hawaii County police cars, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports....

Civil Beat: Hundreds were gathered on the mountain early in the morning to stop construction crews from resuming work on the $1.4 billion project.
The protesters forced the TMT workers to turn around after 11 people were arrested, according to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
KITV reported that TMT crews were crossing onto a portion of the road up Mauna Kea that was managed by the state, the point at which the Department of Land and Natural Resources` officers took over the escort from county police.

Associated Press: As hundreds of protesters flocked to a Hawaii mountain to stop workers from resuming construction on a giant telescope that many people oppose, police arrested a man Wednesday.
The man was arrested on Mauna Kea and was being transported to a police station in Hilo, said Hawaii County police Assistant Chief Henry Tavares. He didn`t immediately know details of the arrest.
Protesters oppose the $1.4 billion Thirty Meter Telescope because it will be built on land held sacred by many Native Hawaiians....

News Maine: The opposition against the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) has been doing the rounds for months now. Though the protesters have refused to budge from their stand, the construction of the TMT was to resume on Wednesday.
The TMT, whose construction began in March near the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii after seven years of environmental studies, public hearings and court proceedings, has been planned as the world's largest optical telescope, requiring an investment of $1.4 billion....

Associated Press: A caravan of construction vehicles that had been slowly making its way to Mauna Kea's 13,000-foot summit Wednesday turned around and headed down the mountain after protesters covered the roadway with boulders at the 10,000-foot level.
After a state Department of Land and Natural Resources official announced the caravan's descent at about 12:45 p.m., protesters began removing the boulders to clear a path for astronomers and staff working at observatories at the summit.
